Life in Jamaica Ghettoes is not bread and butter. But with Bible wisdom in financial stewardship, one can do a lot to empower people living in the slums anywhere in the world.

Kingstone, Jamaica. 2001.

Marcus had everything money could buy. However, he grew up in a Ghetto home at Tivoli Gardens, where his parents struggled to make ends meet. Determined to change his life and siblings, Marcus threw himself into his studies and later into his career. 

Hard work paid and soon he was climbing the corporate ladder with relentless determination. Now, as a successful businessman, he had achieved financial freedom he had been dreaming of. The current reality was impressive.

Marcus owned multiple properties, luxury cars, and a thriving investment portfolio. Yet, despite his opulence, Marcus felt a profound emptiness. Something nameless kept eluding him. peace? He wasn't sure but he knew there was no fulfilment in all what he was doing. Often, he stayed late in bed unable to find sleep. With success, stress had slowly become his new best friend.

💠 A Chance Encounter with Scripture

One evening, feeling particularly despondent after missing his daughter's school play for a business meeting, Marcus attended a charity gala. While perusing the silent auction, he was drawn to an old, leather-bound Bible. 

Intrigued, he bought it and that night, opened it for the first time. His fingers traced the faded gold lettering on the cover, and the faint smell of aged paper filled his nostrils. His eyes landed on Matthew 6:19-21: 

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." This passage about money and the Bible struck a chord deep within him, stirring a restlessness he couldn't ignore. Was he truly rich? Then why were his pockets full yet his heart was empty?

The next day, still unsettled by the verse, Marcus attended a financial seminar. During a break, he overheard a conversation about applying biblical financial principles to personal and business finances. Intrigued, Marcus joined in, and one of the speakers mentioned a course on Christian financial advice. Feeling a glimmer of hope, Marcus decided to enroll, hoping to find answers to the void he felt.

The course was a revelation. Marcus learned about stewardship in the Bible, understanding that his wealth was not just for personal gain but for a higher purpose. He started every day with a Bible verse about money, letting it guide his decisions. One verse that particularly resonated with him was Proverbs 3:9-10: "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine." These words became his meditation. He seemed to smile to himself often. This was new.

💠 The First Happy Accident: A New Purpose

Marcus's newfound approach led him to meet Sarah, a fellow course attendee. Sarah shared her journey of how biblical financial principles had transformed her life and business. They decided to collaborate, launching a project to educate underprivileged communities about money management strategies grounded in the Bible.

He travelled to Trench Town and Riverton apart from Tivoli Gardens to reach those who were completely out of his initial reach. These Ghetto towns were full of unhappy and conflicted youths growing in the same squalor he had risen from. He could no longer look away. 

When he was not giving handouts to desperate mothers, he was sharing stories of hope and transformation in several youth gatherings. It was paying off. He was, seeing firsthand the impact of their work of empowerment,

Marcus's transformation continued as he embraced more biblical financial wisdom. He started every day with a Bible verse about money, letting it guide his decisions. One verse that particularly resonated with him was Proverbs 3:9-10:

This fellowship provided Marcus with spiritual and emotional support also, deepening his faith and commitment to living by biblical principles. He made lifelong friends who became his confidants and prayer partners.
